The Portland Pirates, the Coyotes’ affiliate in the American Hockey League, posted a 1-1-1 record in its three preseason games.
Forward Jordan Szwarz scored a goal in regulation and a shootout goal on Oct. 4 to lead Portland to a 2-1 win over the University of New Brunswick at the Portland (Maine) Ice Arena.
Forward Jordan Martinook also scored a shootout goal for Portland.
Szwarz scored his regulation goal at 15:46 of the second period. University of New Brunswick’s Cam Braes tied the score at 8:01 of the third period.
During the shootout, Portland goalie Mike Lee stopped four of five shots. In addition to playing the shootout, Lee played the second half of the game, plus the overtime, and faced 12 shots.
Portland goalie Mark Visentin started the game and played the first 32 minutes. He stopped all nine shots he faced.
Forward Brian O’Neill scored a goal at 3:59 of overtime on Oct. 7 to lead the Manchester Monarchs to a 4-3 win over Portland at the Portland (Maine) Ice Arena.
“The guys worked hard, for the most part,” said Coyotes Assistant General Manager Brad Treliving, who also serves as G.M. of the Pirates. “We played well for the first two periods, but I thought we sat back too much and gave up too many chances against in the third period.”
Goalie Chad Johnson played the entire game for Portland and stopped 30 of 34 shots.
The Manchester Monarchs scored five power-play goals on Oct. 8 en route to a 7-1 win over Portland at Salem, N.H.
Forward Darian Dziurzynski scored a goal at 14:01 of the third period for Portland.
Manchester was 5 for 11 on the power play, while Portland was 0 for 5. The Monarchs outshot the Pirates 40-18.
Mark Visentin played goal for Portland, which dropped to 1-1-1 after three preseason games.
The Pirates will next take the ice on Oct. 13 when they play at Adirondack in their regular-season opener.
Goalies Mike Lee and Louis Domingue have each played one game this season for the Gwinnett Gladiators.
Domingue is 1-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .966 save percentage. Lee is 0-1-o with a 4.00 goals-against average and a .826 save percentage.
Defenseman Justin Weller has played two games and is plus-1. Forward Maxime Villemaire has played one game and is minus-2.
Defenseman David Schlemko has decided to play for the Arizona Sundogs during the NHL lockout. The Sundogs begin their season on Oct. 20 at the Allen Americans.
