GLENDALE -- Moments before they played their first home game of the 2012-13 season, the Coyotes punctuated their historic 2011-12 season by unveiling their Pacific Division Champions banner inside Jobing.com Arena.
The fans who witnessed the unveiling stood, cheered and howled while the players watched from the ice.
The banner was unveiled in the north end of the arena.
Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippet said it was nice to celebrate last season’s accomplishments but noted it’s just one step in the journey to winning the ultimate prize – the Stanley Cup.
The Coyotes captured their first division title in 33 years last season by defeating the Minnesota Wild, 4-1, at the Xcel Energy Center on April 7. It was the team’s fifth consecutive win to end the regular season.
“What I liked the most about it is we didn’t go into the playoffs through the back door,” General Manager Don Maloney said at the time. “We kicked the door down. We won the division on our own right with a combination of great goaltending and great coaching and everybody contributing. That pleases me as much as anything. We grabbed a hold of the challenge and jumped ahead of some very good teams to win the division.”
The Coyotes eventually reached the Western Conference final but lost to Los Angeles in five games.
