GLENDALE ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have promoted Tim Bernhardt to Director of Amateur Scouting. Bernhardt, along with Maloney, will oversee the Coyotes Draft at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in Philadelphia on Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28. The Coyotes currently own the 12th overall selection in the 2014 NHL Draft. The Coyotes also announced today that Jeff Twohey has been promoted to Assistant Director of Amateur Scouting.
“We are pleased Tim has agreed to become the leader of our amateur scouting staff,” said Maloney. “He brings experience and a proven track record. In addition, with Jeff Twohey rejoining our amateur scouting staff, we believe we have become a much stronger organization.”
Bernhardt joined the Dallas Stars as an amateur scout in 1993 and was named Director of Amateur Scouting in 1998. He left the Stars in 2011 after 18 years in the organization. He was the Stars’ Director of Amateur Scouting for 14 years. Bernhardt, a native of Sarnia, Ontario, was a key player in the Dallas Stars organization and was responsible for drafting players such as Steve Ott (2000), Mike Smith (2001), Jussi Jokinen (2001), Trevor Daley (2002), Loui Eriksson (2003), James Neal (2005), Matt Niskanen (2005) and Jamie Benn (2007).
“I am very excited about this opportunity,” said Bernhardt. “I look forward to working with Don Maloney and his staff to help the Coyotes achieve their goals.”
Prior to his scouting career, the 56-year-old Bernhardt played 67 games in the NHL as a goaltender with the Calgary Flames and the Toronto Maple Leafs. In total, Bernhardt played 12 seasons of professional hockey in the NHL, AHL and CHL.
The 53-year-old Twohey recently re-joined the Coyotes after serving two seasons as the General Manager of the Oshawa Generals (OHL). Prior to that, Twohey worked 30 years (1980-2010) with the Peterborough Petes (OHL) where he served as the General Manager for 17 seasons and led the team to two OHL titles (1996 and 2006).
Before he was the General Manager for the Petes, Twohey, a native of Lindsay, Ontario, served as an assistant general manager and assistant coach for Peterborough, helping the team win four OHL Championships in 1989, 1993, 1996 and 2006. Twohey also worked 10 seasons as an amateur scout for the Dallas Stars and previously served as an amateur scout for the Coyotes from 2010-2012.
