GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have re-signed defenseman Matt Jones to a two-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Jones, 24, played 45 games with the Coyotes last season, registering 0-2-2 and 10 penalty minutes (PIM). The 6-foot, 215-pound defenseman also played in five games with the San Antonio Rampage (AHL) last season.
In 2006-07, the Downers Grove, Illinois native played 45 games with the Coyotes, recording 1-6-7 and 39 PIM. Jones also collected 0-2-2 and 23 PIM in 24 games with the Rampage.
In 106 career NHL games, Jones has registered 1-10-11 and 63 PIM with the Coyotes.
The Coyotes selected Jones in the 3rd round (80th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He played four seasons at the University of North Dakota and helped lead his team to the 2005 NCAA Frozen Four championship game as an assistant captain. In four seasons with North Dakota, Jones collected 16-36-52 and 152 PIM in 162 games.
