GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the team has selected right wing Chris Brown in the second round (36th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft at Bell Centre in Montreal.

Brown, 18, spent the 2008-09 season with the United States National Under-18 Team in USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program (NTDP). Brown recorded 20-18-38 and a team-leading 120 penalty minutes (PIM) in 62 games last season and also ranked 2nd on the team with 10 power play goals. He helped lead Team USA to the gold medal in the 2009 Under-18 World Championship in North Dakota, collecting 4-3-7 in seven games.

A native of Flower Mound, Texas, Brown will attend the University of Michigan in the fall.

In 2007-08, the 6-foot-2, 191-pound Brown recorded 13-7-20 and 74 PIM in 63 games for the U.S. Under-18 team. Prior to joining the U.S. NTDP, Brown played for the Michigan-based Honeybaked Midget Minor team of the Midwest Elite Hockey League. He scored 42-32-74 in 52 games to lead the team in scoring in 2006-07.

NHL Central Scouting Report:
“Chris plays a tough and physical style game. He sets the tone of the game by taking the body hard and making a statement right from the opening face-off. He'll drive his way through checks to get to the puck. He's a very good skater with a long, smooth stride with balance and agility. He has very good anticipation of the play, and plays a solid two-way game.”
