CANADA STAYS UNBEATEN WITH 5-4 WIN OVER SLOVAKIA

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Rick Nash scored a goal and added two assists to help Team Canada defeat Slovakia 5-4 on Wednesday at the 2007 IIHF World Championships in Moscow, Russia. 19-year-old Chicago Blackhawks’ prospect Jonathan Toews, had three helpers in the game as Canada improved to 3-0-0 in the tournament and secured the top spot in Group C.

Shane DoanCoyotes’ captain Shane Doan did not get on the scoreboard, but did play a role on Team Canada’s fourth goal of the evening as he was able to cycle the puck out to Rick Nash who set up Dan Hamhuis’ second period goal to give Canada a 4-2 lead.

Slovakia would come back with two goals of their own to tie the score at four, however, Rick Nash would net his second goal of the game with 10:58 remaining in the third period, a goal that would prove to be the eventual game-winner.

Due to the loss, Slovakia finished the preliminary round with a 2-1-0 record. In other action on Wednesday, Sweden beat Switzerland 6-0. Sweden owns a 3-0-0 record, as Switzerland dropped to 2-1-0. Italy edged Latvia 4-3, and Germany defeated Norway by a score of 5-3.

The Qualifying Round begins on Thursday, May 3rd with Switzerland taking on Finland, Denmark battling Sweden, Germany facing-off against the Czech Republic and Team USA facing Slovakia.
