Phoenix Coyotes’ defenseman Zbynek Michalek’s dream of a goal medal at the World Championships came to a halt on Wednesday as he and his Czech Republic teammates were shutout by Team Russia, 4-0 in Moscow.
Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin scored two goals and added an assist as Russia advanced to the Semi-finals. This was a rematch of last year’s World Championships in Riga, Latvia; however, the outcome was different as the Czechs defeated Russia 4-3 in overtime. Russia will now play the winner of the USA-Finland game on Thursday.
Team Sweden was able to hold off Slovakia by the final score of 7-4 to advance to the Semi-finals as well. Sweden will play the winner of the Canada-Switzerland game tomorrow. Canada will try to stay unbeaten in the tournament, as they own a 5-0-0 record.
