By Chad Lynch
On Saturday, the Phoenix Coyotes and the rest of the hockey world were saddened to learn of the passing of John Ferguson Sr.

A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Ferguson spent eight seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), all as a member of the Montreal Canadiens, where he helped capture five Stanley Cups.

Best known for his toughness, Ferguson recorded 203 points (145 goals, 158 assists) and 1,214 penalty minutes in 500 regular season games.  Ferguson was also selected to the 1965 and 1967 NHL All-Star Games.

Following his playing career, Ferguson served as an assistant coach for Team Canada during the 1972 Summit Series.  He then spent two years as the general manager and coach of the New York Rangers, before joining the Winnipeg Jets in their inaugural NHL season.  Ferguson would go on to spend more than nine seasons as the Jets’ general manager, where he guided the club to a 278-366-98 record.  During the 1985-86 season, Ferguson briefly assumed the Jets’ head coaching duties, posting a 7-6-1 record.

Ferguson went on to serve as the director of player personnel for the Ottawa Senators from 1992-1995, before joining the San Jose Sharks as a senior scout and special assistant to the general manager in 1995.

Ferguson is survived by his wife Joan and their son, John Ferguson Jr.
