TEAM CANADA IMPROVES TO 6-0-0 IN SUPER SERIES

By Chad Lynch
On Wednesday evening, Team Canada continued their impressive play at the 2007 Super Series with a 4-1 win over Team Russia.

During the first period of play, Russia withstood an onslaught of shots from the Canadians, without surrendering the first goal of the game.  Then with just 1:43 to play in the first, Russia’s Artem Anisimov and Canada’s Brandon Sutter received matching minors, resulting in four-on-four hockey.  Canadian forward and Edmonton Oilers prospect Sam Gagner used the extra space to his advantage, scoring his tournament leading fifth goal and 11th point.

Early in the second period, Russia would tie the game on a power play goal by forward Ivan Vishnevsky (drafted by Dallas in 2006), his first of the series.  Over the remainder of the period, the two countries would combine for nine more penalties, but neither would be able to take advantage of the extra attacker, sending the game into the final period of play, tied at 1-1.

In the final stanza, the Canadian offense finally came to life in the form of three goals, including an even-strength, power play and shorthanded tally.  Dana Tyrell (drafted by Tampa Bay in 2007) made it a 2-1 game at 7:06 of the third when he took a feed from Zach Hamill and put a shot past Russian netminder Semen Varlamov.

Six minutes later, Brandon Sutter (drafted by Carolina in 2007) put Canada ahead by two on a shorthanded goal, giving him his first goal in six games.  With just under two minutes remaining in the game Zachary Boychuk scored with just two second remaining on a penalty to Russia’s Ilya Kablukov to give Canada a 4-1 victory.
