Kyle Turris scores his fifth goal of the tournament

On Friday night, Team Canada staged a dramatic comeback to tie Team Russia 4-4 and remain unbeaten in the 2007 Super Series.

In the first period, Russia grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals by Vyatcheslav Voynov and Evgeny Bodrov.  But with just 32-second left in the opening frame, and working on a power play, Phoenix Coyotes prospect Kyle Turris cut the deficit in half with his fifth goal of the series.  On the play, Turris was able dig the puck out from a scrum at the top of the Russian net and send it top shelf over the arm of netminder Vadim Zhelobnyuk.

In the second period, the Canadians offense seemed finally find a rhythm as Logan Pyett and Brandon Sutter scored less than four minutes apart to give Canada a 3-1 lead.  However, Russia would add a pair of late second period goals of their own from Maxim Mamin and Alexander Vasyunov to recapture the lead heading into the second intermission.

In the third period, Canada’s Sam Gagner wasted little time in evening the score at 4-4, scoring just eight seconds into a power play at 1:32 of the period.   Minutes after Team Canada tied the game, their penalty-killing unit was called into action for the seventh time as Turris was handed his second minor penalty of the evening, this time for roughing.  Fortunately, Turris’ infraction would not cost his country, as Canada was able to return to full strength without surrendering a go-ahead goal.

The remainder of the period saw both clubs pursue a defense-first approach to their game, focusing more on preventing goals, than trying to score them.  The system would work perfectly for both clubs as time expired with game ending in a 4-4 tie.
