The Phoenix Coyotes kicked off their 2007 Caravan program in grand style on Saturday as eight players crisscrossed the Valley, visiting local ice arenas around the metropolitan area and culminating with a bit of pub and grub in the evening.
To help celebrate “Hockey Day in Arizona,” Coyotes’ players Ed Jovanovski, Niko Kapanen, Shane Doan, Derek Morris, Alex Auld, Zbynek Michalek and David Aebischer, along with Howler, met with many of the team’s youngest fans at the Alltel Ice Den in Scottsdale, the Desert Schools Coyotes Centers in Chandler and Peoria, Arcadia Ice Arena in Phoenix and Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe. Players relished the chance to be reminded of their past experiences in youth hockey, while the kids in attendance got to meet the players they emulate on the ice in person.
The Coyotes capped off the Caravan’s opening day at the Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery in Tempe as Keith Ballard posed for pictures with patrons, joined by members of The Pack Dance Team.
The Coyotes will take the show on the road on Sunday, August 9 for Day 2 of the Caravan as Mikael Tellqvist and Mathias Tjarnqvist head north to meet with fans in Flagstaff and Prescott Valley. Valley of the Sun fans are encouraged to beat the heat and come join the Coyotes in the cool pines of the high country!
Tellqvist and Tjarnqvist – along with Howler – will be at Flagstaff’s Jay Lively Ice Arena from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. and at Augie’s Place in Prescott Valley from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The Coyotes will be paired in Prescott Valley with members of the organization’s newest affiliate - the Arizona Sundogs, including “Burnie,” the Sundog’s mascot and Howler’s canine counterpart.
The Caravan also makes a stop in Tempe on Sunday where Fredrik Sjostrom and Mike York will be signing autographs at Maloney’s Tavern from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Come out on Sunday and join the Coyotes on the second leg of the week-long Caravan.
