Though he doesn’t seek the limelight for his charitable works, the Phoenix community took time to give back to Doan and his wife Andrea on Monday night as the pair were honored with the 2007 Pat Tillman Community Leadership Award. The award was given by The Leadership Consortium at the fourth annual KTAR Presents Linking Sports and Communities conference to enhance the relationship among athletes, sports organizations and communities.
Shane has become known as a leader and inspiration for young players on-and-off the ice, helping to improve the lives of others throughout the region. His charitable activities include hosting events and purchasing tickets for students at the Thomas J. Pappas School, which provides education for homeless youth; visiting young patients at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and working with fellow NHLer Mark Recchi to establish the “Recchi-Doan Charity Classic” golf tournament, which has raised more than $500,000 for charity.
Andrea has matched her husband stride for stride, delivering holiday gifts to hospital patients, leading a toy collection for the West Valley Child Crisis Center and participating in the Operation Santa food drive for the Westside Food Bank. Andrea was also joined by the couple’s 8-year-old daughter Gracie in donating more than eight inches of hair for the Pantene Beautiful Lengths project last season.
The Phoenix Coyotes organization wishes to thank Shane and Andrea for their commitment to the community and congratulate the Doan’s on their award.
