While a thrilling 3-2 Phoenix Coyotes victory whipped thousands of red-clad fans into frenzy Thursday night at Arena, the importance of a little pinch of pink couldn’t be understated.

Coyotes coaches, management and broadcasters all sported special pink ties during Phoenix’s first game of the 2007-08 season, when the team also helped kick start Hockey Fights Cancer – a joint initiative between the National Hockey League and the NHL Players Association to raise money and awareness for hockey's most important fight.

Players brought some pink on to the ice as they sported pink ribbons on their helmets. In addition, the evening featured educational PSAs, informational brochures and one-of-a-kind Hockey Fights Cancer pins – all designed to help raise awareness of a cause so near and dear to the NHL and the greater hockey community.

Many current and former members of the NHL and their families have experienced the effects of cancer. Saku Koivu, John Cullen, Milos Holan, Mario Lemieux, Phil Kessel, NHL Official Paul Stewart and the late Doug Wickenheiser and Roger Neilson fought courageous battles against cancer. Cancer has also touched someone close to Coyotes forward Peter Muller, who is helping the Coyotes champion the team’s month long “Coyotes for a Cure” campaign to help increase awareness and raise valuable funds.

This season marks the 10th Anniversary of the Hockey Fights Cancer initiative, which is supported by NHL Member Clubs, NHL Alumni, the NHL Officials' Association, Professional Hockey Trainers and Equipment Managers, corporate marketing partners, broadcast partners and fans throughout North America. While the Coyotes were the first team to host an event this season, all 30 Member Clubs’, players, management and fans will host an event of their own throughout the month of October.
