MIRANDA'S SPECIAL DAY IN VANCOUVER

Wednesday, 01.16.2008 / 6:56 PM / Features
By Heath Price-Khan
On October 1, 2007 Miranda Klassen was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, but this 10 year old fighter from just outside of Vancouver, BC continues to battle with the will of a champion on a daily basis. This life changing moment is one which is impossible to prepare for, whether you are a ten year old, or their parent, but that has not stopped Miranda from continuing to enjoy her passions.
Shane Doan and Miranda

The Phoenix Coyotes are very lucky to be Miranda’s favorite hockey team, and she is a huge fan. Her appreciation for the history of the game is evident on her website where she lists some of her favorite retired players as Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Bobby Hull, and Steve Yzerman. Currently, she looks to the desert when she wants to check in on her favorite active players, Phoenix Coyotes Captain Shane Doan, and All-Star Defenseman Ed Jovanovski.

During the Coyotes recent road trip through Western Canada, they played a crucial game in Vancouver where they beat the Canucks 4-3. Everyone who watched that game saw inspired performances from Ed Jovanovski and Shane Doan. Their motors were running hard all night as Jovo delivered a game changing power play goal with 13 seconds left in the 2nd period to give the Coyotes a lead they would never relinquish. Shane Doan helped ice the game with an assist generated by pure hard work in the third period. If you have any questions about where this effort and will to win came from you can look no further than 10 year old Miranda Klassen.

Ed Jovanovski and Miranda
Before the game Miranda got to visit with Wayne Gretzky, Shane Doan, and Ed Jovanovski so you can bet her courage rubbed off on everyone. For a young girl that was just discharged from the hospital this was set to be a day that she would never forget. However, because of her current condition Miranda cannot be around crowds and in public so it seemed for a while that she would not get to watch her favorite players in action at GM Place.

Enter two first class organizations with a great solution. The Phoenix Coyotes and Vancouver Canucks came up with a brilliant plan and put Miranda with her friends and family in a luxury suite so that they could enjoy the game in style and comfort. In that suite there were some rooting for the Coyotes, and some rooting for the Canucks, but the one constant was that everyone was, and is, rooting for Miranda!
