CAMPUS REPORT: MARCH HOCKEY MADNESS

TOURNEY TIME HAS ARRIVED

By Heath Price-Khan
The Phoenix Coyotes top collegiate prospects will all be making a run at the Frozen Four in college hockey’s version of March Madness this year.

Michigan surprised no one by getting the number one seed in the East Regional where they will try to navigate a tough bracket that includes St. Cloud State, Clarkson, and Niagara. Look for Kevin Porter, Chad Kolarik, and Chris Summers to show why the Coyotes drafted them and lead the Wolverines to a berth in the Frozen Four.

Blake Wheeler’s Minnesota Gophers will make a run in the Northeast Regional against Boston College, Air Force, and Miami (Ohio). The 2004 1st round pick will look to use his big frame (6’4”, 215lbs) to overpower the competition and propel his storied program to another National Championship.

Wisconsin seemed to be on the outside looking in with a sub-.500 record of 15-16-7, but the selection committee decided to reward the Badgers by putting them in the field of 16. That decision will more than likely end any speculation about freshman Kyle Turris joining the Phoenix Coyotes this season.

While some Coyotes’ fans eager to see Kyle Turris may be upset that the Badgers got in the tourney, former Badger Steven Reinprecht is certainly not. Rhino is one of five current Coyotes whose former teams will be making a run at National Championship.

Keith Ballard will be showing his Gopher pride as he pulls for Wheeler and Minnesota.

Matt Jones’ younger brother Zach plays for the North Dakota Fighting Sioux so he will be pulling extra hard for his alma mater.

Daniel Winnik is the only member of the Coyotes to lace it up for a school on the east coast. His University of New Hampshire Wildcats are the #1 seed in the West Regional.

For Winnik’s team to make the Frozen Four, they will have to get through a bracket that includes Mike York’s alma mater, the defending national champs from Michigan State.

With lots of rooting interest in the Coyotes locker room, PhoenixCoyotes.com decided to get the inside scoop from these five former college stars.

Check out what Ballard, Rhino, Winnik, York, and Jones think about their teams chances to win it all.
