CAMPUS REPORT: FROZEN THOUGHTS

Matt Rosen gives his take on the Frozen Four and the Coyotes' Prospects

By Matt Rosen
The University of Michigan's hopes of a National Championship came to a halt last night, as they were upset 5-4 in overtime by Notre Dame.  The Fighting Irish jumped out on top of the Wolverines early and led 3-0 after the first period.  But the top team in the regular seasons would not go away quietly, and under the leadership of Coyotes' prospects Chad Kolarik and Kevin Porter, the Wolverines clawed their way back into the game.  Porter set up Kolarik for his first of two goals with a nifty pass that he would roof top shelf to spark the Maize and Blue comeback.   Fifteen seconds later Matt Rust would slip one by Irish goaltender Jordan Pearce to cut the lead to 3-2.  Early on in the third period it was Kolarik again to complete the comeback as he batted a rebound out of mid-air into the back of the net to tie the game at three.  After the teams traded goals they were headed into overtime.  Just 5:44 into the extra frame, Calle Ridderwall would pounce on a rebound that beat Michigan goalie Bryan Hogan to send the Irish to their first ever birth in a National Championship game.   A heartbreaking loss for the Wolverines as anything less than a National Championship this season, to them would be deemed a disappointment.

Notre Dame will take on Boston College in the Championship game on Saturday.  B.C. got by North Dakota with a 6-1 victory yesterday at Pepsi Center in Denver.

The collegiate careers of Coyotes' prospects Kevin Porter and Chad Kolarik are over.  They have played their final games as amateurs and now many questions lie ahead. Will Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney sign these two immediately or will he wait until the summer?  Will the next stop in their careers be with the San Antonio Rampage for a playoff run? Will Kevin Porter win the Hobey Baker Award as college's best player?  That question will be answered in a few hours, the rest, only time will tell.
