YOUNG GRETZKY ON GRIDIRON

Friday, 07.11.2008 / 2:37 PM / Features
By Dave Vest
Coyotes Head Coach Wayne Gretzky is eager for the upcoming NHL season to begin, but he also is eager for the Oaks Christian School football season to start. That’s because Gretzky’s son Trevor, 15, is in line to be the quarterback of the school’s junior varsity team.

Oaks Christian School is a private high school outside of Los Angeles that takes its athletic program seriously. It has won five straight Southern Section football championships and six overall.

The team’s summer practices have generated a media buzz because sons of other luminaries also are in the football program, among them actor Will Smith’s son, Trey, a receiver, and former NFL star Joe Montana’s son, Nick, a quarterback.  Some media reports even have speculated that Nick Montana, a junior who transferred to Oaks Christian this summer, and Trevor Gretzky, a sophomore, already are embroiled in ‘a quarterback controversy,’ but that’s not the case.

“Truth be told, there is no quarterback controversy because Trevor is the quarterback on the J.V. team and Nick Montana is the quarterback on the varsity, so there is no competition between them because they are on different teams,” Wayne Gretzky said Friday. “They are good friends and they train together (with quarterback guru Steve Clarkson). Nick is a good person and Trevor is looking forward to playing with him at some point in the future.”

Trevor Gretzky (6-foot-2, 170 pounds) is an all-around athlete who also plays hockey and baseball. The latter is his favorite sport.
