COYOTES SUPPORT 'WATER WATCHERS'

The Phoenix Coyotes and Coyotes Causes have partnered with Phoenix Children’s Hospital and its Water Watchers program to help increase awareness of Drowning Impact Awareness Month.

Arizona ranks second in the nation for drownings and every year an average of 20 children drown in Maricopa County alone. Drownings and near-drownings are the second most common cause of injury for children in our state.

Putting a safety plan into place can save a life. Be sure to practice the ABC’s of water safety:

Adult supervision when children have access to water is critical. Assign an adult to maintain constant eye-to-eye supervision with children around ANY body of water (pool, spa, bath, bucket, etc.), especially at parties or group gatherings.

Barriers must be placed between children and water. An effective barrier could have prevented 95 percent of the drownings studied by the Arizona Child Fatality Review Team. Fences should be at least five feet high and gates should be self-closing and self-latching.

Classes in CPR for adults and swimming lessons for children can round out a family’s water safety plan.

Since Drowning Impact Awareness Month first began in 2004, more than 125,000 purple ribbons have been distributed throughout the community. The purple ribbon symbolizes and reminds us of the impact drownings and near-drownings have upon the victim, as well as family members, friends, emergency personnel and the entire community.

Members of the Phoenix Coyotes staff will visit Phoenix Children’s Hospital on Friday, Aug. 8 to hold a fun Coyotes festival where kids will be able to participate in a variety of water safety-related arts and crafts activities.

It’s important to remember that by taking action in our own neighborhoods and communities, we can help prevent child drownings.
