HOWLER SHOWS KIDS WATER SAFETY

Monday, 08.18.2008 / 4:09 PM / Community
By Don Schwartz
With an inner tube around his waist and a snorkel on his face, Howler helped the Coyotes spread the word of water safety over the weekend at the City of Mesa’s First Annual Aqua Mania, held at the Brimhall Aquatic Complex. The free swim day also featured information booths staffed by local public safety and medical personnel as well as a mock drowning and rescue demonstration to remind children and parents about the importance of watching kids around water.

HOWLER PRACTICES WATER SAFETY
Though he’s a world-record holder in the doggy paddle, Howler stayed high and dry as he reminded all in attendance to “be Coyotes cool around the pool.” This important message was reinforced through water safety coloring pages given to children at the event and a purple ribbon worn by the top dog of NHL mascots, reminding everyone of the impact drownings and near-drownings have upon the victim, family members, friends, emergency personnel and the entire community.

August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month and the Coyotes have partnered with Phoenix Children’s Hospital and its Water Watchers program to help increase awareness of this serious issue. Arizona ranks second in the nation for drownings and every year an average of 20 children drown in Maricopa County alone. Drownings and near-drownings are the second most common cause of injury for children in our state.

By taking action in our own neighborhoods and communities, we can help prevent child drownings. To request and distribute purple ribbons in your community, please visit www.phoenixchildrens.com.
