WINNIK NETS COLLEGE DEGREE

As the saying goes, you are never too old to go back to school.

Just ask Coyotes forward Daniel Winnik, 23, who returned to the University of New Hampshire this summer to earn his remaining credits for a Bachelor’s degree in political science.

“I am happy it is done and over with,” said Winnik, who played his first full season with the Coyotes in 2007-08.

Winnik started taking classes at UNH in 2003 and played for the NCAA school’s hockey team. After his junior season, Winnik turned professional signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Coyotes. But just because he became a professional hockey player didn’t mean his education wasn’t important.

“It was my plan from the start, when I first signed with the Coyotes two years ago, that I would get my degree done at some point,” Winnik said.

During the summer, Winnik took three courses - an independent study program and two sign language classes - to finish his remaining 12 credits at UNH. While on campus in Durham, N.H., Winnik prepared for the upcoming NHL season every day with his old coaches at the Whittemore Center, the school’s home rink.

Concentrating on school and working out for the 2008-09 NHL season at the same time was not a problem for Winnik.

“It was not hard at all keeping a routine,” Winnik said. “I find that school helps with that. It gets me up in the morning and keeps me busy.”

Winnik was asked if he planned to put his Political Science degree to use after his NHL days.

“I don’t know,” Winnik said. “Maybe I’ll try law school at some point.”
