GILBERT RINK READY TO OPEN

While the Valley continues to swelter in triple-digit heat, the southeast Valley is about to get a lot cooler – Polar, even!

This weekend marks the grand opening of Polar Ice Gilbert at 2305 E. Knox Rd. in Gilbert, near Crossroads Park. This two-sheet ice facility features all the latest amenities for youth and adult hockey as well as figure skating and other activities.

Grand opening festivities begin Saturday (Sept. 13) at 9 a.m. with public skating starting at 11 a.m. The day also will feature a special visit from the top dog of NHL mascots himself – Howler! Coyotes forward Steven Reinprecht and defenseman Zbynek Michalek will make a visit to Polar Ice Gilbert on Sunday, Sept. 14 from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m., joined by members of the City of Gilbert Fire Department.

With the opening of Polar Ice Gilbert, metropolitan Phoenix now is home to 12 sheets of ice and seven public skating rinks, turning the desert floor into a virtual hockey hotbed.

“These rinks really show the strength of hockey here in the Valley,” said Scott Storkan, Coyotes Manager of Hockey Development. “The growth of the sport at all levels within Arizona has been tremendous, but especially with youth hockey.”

In addition to a number of house leagues that will call the Gilbert facility home, Polar Ice Gilbert also will host the Arizona Heat travel team, which will begin with “B” teams in the Mite, Squirt, Peewee and Bantam Divisions.

“It’s so important for NHL clubs to get involved with their local youth hockey leagues,” Storkan said. “We’re excited about our continued partnership with Polar Ice and honored to present this opportunity to youth right here in the southeast Valley. Who knows; maybe a future NHL star will someday get their start in Gilbert.”

Polar Ice Gilbert is the third such Polar Ice project in the Valley, joining sister facilities in Chandler and Peoria. For more information on the new facility, visit www.polaricegilbert.com
