TIKHONOV AT A GLANCE:

It has been an interesting trek for Viktor Tikhonov. First eligible for the NHL Draft in 2006, the native of Moscow wasn’t selected until 2008 when the Coyotes picked him in the first round.

Growing up with heavy expectations under the watchful eye of his father, who was an assistant coach with the San Jose Sharks, the younger Tikhonov has essentially come out of nowhere to make a name for himself.

Last season, Tikhonov notched 12 points in 43 games with Cherepovets Severstal in Russia. He also participated with Russia in the World Junior Championships and finished with five goals and two assists, along with a bronze medal. Tikhonov was named the tournament’s best forward.

Tikhonov, whose grandfather is a Soviet coaching legend, will be joining the Coyotes for his first professional training camp after signing a three-year entry-level contract on July 1, 2008.

THE SKINNY ON TIKHONOV:

“Viktor is a real interesting player. He was on our radar for a long time. His lack of a Russian passport prohibited him from being on the international season prior to this year. What really drew us to him was his size, his ability to skate and the pace at which he plays. He is a second- and third-effort player. World Junior Championships is a real good indication (of his talents), playing against those elite players of his peer group and being named MVP. He is relentless on the puck. He can go in on the fore-check, have success, take away time and space, and he also plays with a great deal of intelligence. He will come in and compete for a job,” Coyotes Assistant General Manager Brad Treliving said.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH TIKHONOV:
Q: What is the most memorable moment of your career?
VT: “I would have to say probably being drafted by the Coyotes. It was the third time I was in the draft so it was exciting.”

Q: What is your typical pre-game routine?
VT: “I try to stay relaxed. I will play a little soccer with the guys and stretch.”

Q: What will be the toughest part about the transition from Russia to the North American game?
VT: “The speed of the games. Guys here are more aggressive and you have to make quicker decisions.”

Q: How did you spend your summer?
VT: “It was an extended summer for me because the Russian league is playing by now. I played a lot of golf and spent time with friends.  I also worked out and skated with the Sharks players in North California.”

Q: What is your favorite activity away from the arena?
VT: “I enjoy spending time with the family and friends. I love golfing. I have a 6-8 golf handicap.”
