MALONEY ANALYZES ROOKIE CAMP

Thursday, 09.18.2008 / 6:22 PM / Features
By Russell Brooks
Q: Were there any players at the Rookie Camp who surprised you?
DM: “Yes. To me, Mathieu Brodeur, I really liked his game under pressure for a young guy. I liked Colin Long. You could see his offensive intelligence on the ice. I really liked Tyler Johnson. He is not big in stature, but he is as smart as anyone on the ice. Those guys caught my eye. These guys might have a chance (playing at the NHL level). I thought Wednesday’s game was a much better game. It had better flow. It was fun to watch.”

Q: What are your thoughts on goaltender Kurtis Mucha’s play?
DM: “He is probably the biggest surprise we have in rookie camp. Quite frankly, when we invited him in, we thought he wasn’t going to play any games. He joined us in great shape, competed, and he really held us in (Tuesday) night. He might have been our best player (Tuesday) night.”

Q: Do you feel the rookies you have kept for training camp have a good chance to play in preseason games?
DM: “I think the players have done well enough this week to deserve a chance to go on the ice with the bigger players and see if they can compete. It’s probably a two- or three-day thing and then we will do another assessment to see who stays and goes. “

Q: How impressed were you with the chemistry of your top two rookie lines?
DM: “They have played a lot together. They look good together. I thought they were very close to getting four or fives more goals. They were a pass off here or their timing was off. It’s all encouraging. These games were a good warm-up for the big boys coming Friday and that’s where we start zooming in and paying attention.”

Q: During the webcast Tuesday, you said four to six players had a shot at seeing time with the Coyotes this year. Do you want to identify any of those players?
DM:
“I think it’s more of an ongoing evaluation. I really truly believe that Kyle Turris, Mikkel Boedker, Viktor Tikhonov, Kevin Porter, Chad Kolarik, Brett MacLean, and Jonas Ahnelov have shots. I really like Ahnelov. He was a pleasant surprise. These are the guys that are pushing hard for a spot. At some point, I could see all of these guys playing for us this year.”
