COYOTES HELP OPEN BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

Glendale’s children have a new place to become the champions they were meant to be with the opening of the Swift Kids Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix, a 25,000 square-foot facility located at 6420 W. Maryland Ave.

The newest member of the Boys & Girls Clubs family celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday afternoon with fanfare, dignitaries and praise, thanks in part to the generous contributions of Swift Charities for Children, the Coyotes and team owner Jerry Moyes.

“Having the support of Mr. Moyes, the Coyotes and Swift has been incredibly important,” said Jeffrey Goulder, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix. “Without Mr. Moyes and the Coyotes behind the fundraising efforts, it wouldn’t have been possible to make this happen.

The Swift Kids Branch features plenty of amenities for children to exercise their growing minds and bodies, including a teen center, game room, art room, computer lab, learning center and two gymnasiums. Additional programs will enable children to develop character, leadership and health and life skills.

“It’s so important to provide an environment for children where they can make their dreams come true,” Moyes said. “Just having these kids around the good people who work with the Boys & Girls Clubs will help them make healthy choices in their lives and achieve their goals.”

Also showing their support for the club were Coyotes President and Chief Operating Officer Douglas Moss, General Manager Don Maloney, forward Shane Doan and defenseman Ed Jovanovski. Being parents themselves, it was easy for these Coyotes ambassadors to see how the area’s youth would benefit from the club.

“Kids need to stay active and I know there are a lot of children who don’t have that opportunity at home,” Jovanovski said. “A place like this is going to keep them on the right track, allow them to be around positive influences and simply let them play games, have fun and just be kids.”
