CROSBY LEADS PENGUINS BY EXAMPLE

By Russell Brooks
One of the NHL’s top stars visits Jobing.com Arena tonight when Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins play the Coyotes.

Quiet on and off the ice, Crosby leads his team by example.

“He’s not a real vocal guy,” said Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik, who has a goal and an assist this season. “It’s good like that. The way he carries himself reflects down the line.”

Pittsburgh Head Coach Michel Therrien agrees.

“He is a great leader on the ice,” said Therrien who is in his third season with the Penguins. “He is a great leader off the ice, too, with the way he has managed himself. It’s a learning process for him to become the captain he is going to be.”

Crosby feels at ease being the captain of the reigning Eastern Conference champions.

“We have a young team and I feel pretty comfortable with that role,” said Crosby, who has three goals and 10 assists this season. “Everyone has an opportunity to lead in here, but for me, if anything, it makes me better and motivates me to lead by example.”

Crosby said the Coyotes remind him of the Penguins in some ways.

“They have some good young players,” Crosby said. “They have a good goalie as well. They have certainly come a long way the last couple years and it looks like everyone they have is developing well.”

Orpik admires Crosby’s commitment given his superstar status.

“He doesn’t take a day off,” Orpik said. “He’s as committed as they come. I think the younger guys and some of the older guys see the way he prepares himself for practice and games every day. It filters down to the rest of the guys.”

Now in his fourth year in the NHL, Crosby is getting some of the looks that Coyotes Head Coach Wayne Gretzky received when he played.

“It’s funny,” Orpik said. “You watch the younger guys get called up and they come in and you catch them staring at him.”
