FANS MAKE FOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS

Tuesday, 12.02.2008 / 1:15 PM / Community
By Don Schwartz
Coyotes fans ventured to Jobing.com Arena on Nov. 28 carrying more than their typical devotion for the desert dogs.

Approximately 1,400 pounds of food and nearly $800 in cash were donated by fans entering the post-Thanksgiving Day game as part of the Leading Ladies’ Biscuit in the Basket Food Drive, benefitting the Salvation Army. Leading this charge were the ladies behind the Coyotes players – their wives, fiancées and girlfriends – who made the donation process easy for the hundreds who entered through Gates 4 and 7 and stuffed the iconic red-clad kettles and buckets with plenty of holiday cheer.

More than simply food and money, though, the donations collected represented a chance at hope for the many people each year impacted by events such as natural disasters, economic emergencies and general tough times.

“We’re fortunate to have a fan base that cares so much about the community and is always there to make an assist,” said Sarah Finecey, the team’s director of community relations. “We also couldn’t have asked for a better partner in this drive than the Salvation Army. The food and money they collected will immediately go toward supporting the many assistance programs the Salvation Army offers to those in need.”

Everyone who donated to the food drive was eligible to enter a contest to win a team-signed jersey and four seats on the glass to a future game. Coyotes fans will have even more opportunities to assist the community and win one-of-a-kind prize packages throughout December and its Coyotes Cause – “Caring for our Children,” Child Health and Safety Awareness Month, Presented by Sharp Business Systems.

On Dec. 13, the Coyotes will partner with Fox Sports Arizona to host a toy drive at Jobing.com Arena to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Arizona. On Dec. 20, the arena will serve as a backdrop to the Holiday Heroes Blood Drive, benefitting United Blood Services.
