An exceptional season for Coyotes captain Shane Doan just added another memorable marker to the list: A visit to the 2009 NHL All-Star game in Montréal.

Doan was selected to the mid-season classic for the second time in his career on Wednesday and is excited to get the opportunity to play.

“Its great,” said Doan, who has 18 goals and 20 assists in 41 games this season. “Obviously, it’s an incredible opportunity to see guys that you have much respect for. The game is special because you get to be with a group of guys that are best in the entire world, which is such a rare opportunity.”

Shane Doan was selected to his second All-Star game in Wednesday ...more
This is Doan’s second appearance to the All-Star game and first since being selected in 2004, which was held in Minnesota, and much deserved according to Coyotes Head Coach Wayne Gretzky.

“I have said it a lot this year and this is the best I have seen him play, said Gretzky, who made 18 visits to the All-Star game. “He is our most consistent player over 41 games. He is the kind of guy as a coach you admire because I can give him constructive criticism and he takes it and wants to become a better player.”

Doan will wear the number 18 for the Western Conference All-Stars in the game due to the fact Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews wears 19 and was selected by the fans.

The native of Halkirk, Alberta, will participate in Montréal with the support of his family by his side.

“My boys are so excited to get to see some of the guys that they are obviously big fans of as well,” said Doan, who was referring to his sons Josh and Carson.

Defenseman Ed Jovanovski, who represented the Coyotes in the All-Star game last season in Atlanta, believes this opportunity for Doan is much warranted.

“He has had a great start to this season and he will have a lot of fun,” Jovanovski said.

As part of All-Star weekend in Montréal, which is being held January 23-25, the Canadiens are celebrating 100 years of existence, something Doan is looking forward to.

“It’s incredible,” Doan said. “Obviously the history of our sport is huge and Montréal is probably one of the main places where most of it occurred. To be able to go back there for their 100th year and everything that is involved with that is very special.” is the official Web site of the Arizona Coyotes.
