THE DESERT DOG BLOG: KIDS QUESTION TURRIS AFTER GAME

Sunday, 01.11.2009 / 2:10 AM / Features
Information, observations and anecdotes about the Coyotes
as told by Dave Vest, the team's V.P. of News Content

I had to wait a little while to interview Kyle Turris after Saturday’s game because a group of children were granted exclusive access to him as part of a program for wannabe reporters.

I didn't mind because the kids asked Turris some good questions, and I learned a thing or two about him that I didn’t know before the pre-teens questioned him.

For instance, Turris was a quarterback on his high school football team and he also enjoyed playing lacrosse as a kid because his father was a pro lacrosse player.

Other questions posed by the kids included:

Do you ever get cold during a game? (Answer: No, except if you sit on the bench for too long).
Do you ever get scared during a shootout? (Answer: No, but it can be nerve-racking).
Who do you like better, Howler or Pierre? (Answer: He likes them both; Pierre is pretty funny and Howler is always there egging the team on).

Ilya Bryzgalov played a terrific game for the Coyotes on Saturday night and earned his seventh NHL shutout.

At the same time, Dallas goalie Marty Turco also was credited with a shutout, but he and the Stars lost and earned only one point as opposed to the two points the Coyotes earned.

After the game, I asked Bryzgalov if he was a fan of the shootout format.

“No, not really,” he said. “It’s difficult when there is an extra point on the line. It’s tough. I’m sure it’s frustrating for them to lose an extra point like that because they played well. But it’s the rules and we must play by the rules.”

Rookie Viktor Tikhonov is expected to be placed on the injured-reserve list soon. Don’t be surprised if the Coyotes call up Daniel Winnik or perhaps even Steven Goertzen from their top affiliate in San Antonio to take Tikhonov's place.

Thanks for reading.
