THE DESERT DOG BLOG: TRADE DEADLINE LOOMING

Tuesday, 03.03.2009 / 6:33 PM / The Desert Dog Blog - by Dave Vest

Information, observations and anecdotes about the Coyotes
as told by Dave Vest, the team's V.P. of News Content

There’s nothing like the trade deadline to remind you that the NHL is a business.
Morris

That fact again became crystal clear on Tuesday morning as the team left the Valley for Boston, the first stop on a five-game trip. Defenseman Derek Morris was not on the plane with us. While his absence did not surprise me, it underlined with black marker that Morris most likely will be traded to another team within hours.

Again, this is a business and I get that. But I will miss Morris. He (almost) always honored my requests for interviews and his insights into the next opponent or how the Coyotes were playing at a certain time always were original and quite frank. I definitely think he has a career in broadcasting waiting for him after his playing days are over.

General Manager Don Maloney and Assistant General Manager Brad Treliving also were not on the team’s flight to Beantown. They were back in their offices in Glendale, presumably talking with other teams about trading Morris and quite possibly other players the team might be willing to deal.

I invite all of you to check in with phoenixcoyotes.com on a regular basis as the trade deadline comes and goes. I also invite you to check in for timely interviews with any new players the Coyotes may acquire. (Just in case you're wondering, every other player on the roster was on the flight to Boston.)

Kyle Turris shot me a quick smile as he boarded the plane on Tuesday morning. As you know, Turris is back with the team after an eight-game stay in the American Hockey League, during which he notched four goals and three assists.

I am expecting to see a more confident player as Turris plays out the rest of the season with the Coyotes. I am also expecting him to write another blog for phoenixcoyotes.com about his time in the AHL. Check back soon for that.

Yandle
I am eager to watch the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Bruins play on Thursday and the environment inside the TD Banknorth Garden. I am also eager to see just how many tickets defenseman Keith Yandle ends up providing friends and family members. Yandle recently joked that he needed “hundreds” of tickets to distribute for his first NHL game in his hometown. Hmm. I think he was joking…

Thanks for reading.
