Time and time again, Coyotes Head Coach Wayne Gretzky has said that his team will not win games by blowing out opponents or by scores of 7-5 or 6-4, but rather close, one-goal games like 3-2 and 2-1.

That wasn't the case Sunday night at the Glendale Arena.

The Coyotes scored a season high eight goals in an 8-4 win over the Carolina Hurricanes and Gretzky had no problem with it.

"It's nice to see the guys have a fun time," said Gretzky. "We haven't had a game like that since we played Columbus, when we beat them 5-1. It was a nice victory for the guys because they worked hard."

The eight total goals was the most goals the Coyotes have scored at the Glendale Arena since it opened midway through the 2003-2004 season.

Ladislav Nagy recorded his second career hat trick and added two assists for a five point night, a career high.

"That was a lot of fun tonight," said Nagy. "It was nice getting my second ever hat trick and everyone played great."

The last time the Coyotes scored eight goals in a game was against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on December 22, 1999 at the Arrowhead Pond.

Captain Shane Doan knew it was important for Phoenix to get a couple goals early and continue the scoring throughout the whole game.

"We found a way to get some offense and obviously we haven't done that all year and it was good to put a few in," said Doan, who had an assist in a victory.

While the offensive explosion was nice for one night, Gretzky doesn't expect many more wins like this.

"I still expect us to win one-goal games, but these wins are fun."
