Team USA Ties Switzerland In World Junior Championship;
U.S. Plays Canada Saturday For Right
To Advance Straight To Semis

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Switzerland scored a pair of third-period power play goals to gain a 2-2 tie with the 2006 U.S. National Junior Team before 12,130 spectators at the Pacific Coliseum in its third game at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.

"It was a good hockey game," said United States Head Coach Walt Kyle. "I thought both teams played hard. We scored a couple of goals early, but didn't get the job done after that."

The United States took a 1-0 lead on a play that had Nate Davis (Rock River, Ohio) feeding Geoff Paukovich (Englewood, Colo.) from behind the net at 6:16 of the first period. Tom Fritsche (Parma, Ohio) also drew an assist on the play. The other Team USA goal in the opening period came when Bobby Ryan (Cherry Hill, N.J.) banged in a rebound off Robbie Schremp's (Fulton, N.Y.) shot from the top of the left faceoff circle.

In the second period, United States netminder Cory Schneider (Marblehead, Mass.) made a key save on Steve Kellenberger from eight feet out just more than seven minutes into the period. Team USA's best scoring chance in the period came when Davis moved in alone on Reto Berra, but he was stopped by a toe save.

Switzerland's Eric Blum banked a shot off  Schneider and in from just below the goal line with the United States shorthanded at 7:53 of the third to pull the Swiss to within one. Then, with a two-man advantage, Matthias Joggi tied the game at 14:08. Team USA applied pressure in the waning seconds, however, could not get another past Berra.

Schneider finished with 22 saves, while Berra had 28 stops.

Team USA (2-0-1) will face Canada (3-0-0) tomorrow in the final Preliminary Round game for both teams. The winner will earn the top seed from Group A and receive a bye into the semifinals. The loser will play in a quarterfinal game on Jan. 2.

NOTES: Robbie Schremp had an assist in the game and is the lone United States player to have recorded a point in all five games (including the two exhibition contests Team USA played) ... Geoff Paukovich's first-period goal was his first goal of the tournament and his first goal this season. Paukovich plays NCAA Division I college hockey for the two-time defending national champion Denver Pioneers.
