COYOTES X-ING WITH PETER LOUGH
Arizona Sting defenseman Peter Lough (pronounced "LOCK") took a time out as the Sting prepare for their home opener this Frinday, to sit down with phoenixcoyotes.com and look ahead to the 2006 Arizona Sting Season.
Q: Talk about your thoughts going into the 2006 season.
A: Obviously, I am very anxious to get things started. The entire team has a lot of optimism and we know the franchise has brought in some guys who will be key pieces to our puzzle. I think we can really build on what we accomplished last year.
Q: Last year was a big season for you personally. You finished 2nd in scoring by defensemen on the team and were named to your first NLL All-Star game. What are you looking for personally this season?
A: First and foremost, I want to contribute in the defensive end, as well as the offensive end to give the team a boost. It's important that I stay sharp mentally and if I do that and take care of my responsibilities, the personal accolades will take care of itself.
Q: You have a rich hockey background with four seasons at Brock University, time on the Canadian National Team and pre-season experience with the Rochester Americans. Are you still close to the game?
A: Absolutely. Especially growing up in Canada, it is ridiculous what a huge emphasis is placed on hockey and it is still a big part of my life, but now I am just a fan.
Q: Did you ever have any thoughts of pursuing a career in hockey?
A: I thought about it for a while and I gave it a shot, but after the Rochester camp< I realized that it wasn't going to work out I turned all my attention to lacrosse and it has worked out well.
Q: Having spent the last two seasons with the Sting, what are your thoughts on the lacrosse fans in Arizona?
A: The fans here in Arizona are fantastic. They really are great; they come out louder every game and have the ability to become a 7th man out there for us. I haven't seen anything official, but I think they really do have to be the loudest fans in the game. They're the best.
Q: Does this year's squad have what it takes to contend for a championship?
A: Definitely. We have brought in guys like Andrew Guindon and Bruce Murray to help solidify the defense and up front guys like Matt Brown and Jason Crosbie to add some extra punch up front and bring the ball up the floor. This team is certainly be a championship contender.
