THE DESERT DOG BLOG: MONTREAL BUZZING OVER DRAFT

Friday, 06.26.2009 / 9:35 AM / The Desert Dog Blog - by Dave Vest

Information, observations and anecdotes about the Coyotes
as told by Dave Vest, the team's V.P. of News Content

I am in Montreal for this weekend’s NHL Entry Draft and this city is buzzing. Unfortunately, my decision to study Spanish in high school and college instead of French is coming back to haunt me on this trip. "Bonjour" and "Merci" are only getting me so far. Ditto my admiration for former Expos catcher Gary Carter!

Montreal again is proving to be a terrific host for this event. I toured the Bell Centre this morning and I can report that the stage looks really slick. I invite you to see for yourself on Versus beginning at 4 p.m. Friday (Arizona time).

Outside the arena, fans are milling around hoping to get a glimpse of anybody who looks like a hockey player - past, present or future.

Anyway, it’s Thursday and the Coyotes staff is making its final preparations for the next two days. General Manager Don Maloney, Assistant General Manager Brad Treliving and the scouting staff have been meeting twice a day since arriving at the team’s hotel earlier this week. The Coyotes have six picks in this draft, including the sixth overall selection. Late Thursday, Maloney and Treliving squeezed in some last-minute interviews with a few players they are considering drafting in the later rounds.

What will happen at the beginning of the first round of this draft is challenging to predict. The New York Islanders own the first overall selection and they are playing it very close to the vest. Most people covering this draft, including myself, believe they will pick Canadian forward John Tavares. Seeking a new arena, the Isles need an impact player and Tavares wears that badge. Nevertheless, some believe New York will choose Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman because he is considered to be ready to play in the NHL tomorrow. Meanwhile, a few experts are speculating the Isles will shock everyone and select Canadian forward Matt Duchene. Whichever player New York chooses, its selection will create a domino effect that will be fun to watch unfold.

Check back to phoenixcoyotes.com frequently this weekend for interviews with some of the new players and members of the staff.

Thanks for reading.

Dave
