THE DESERT DOG BLOG: MALONEY EXPLAINS SIGNING PYATT

The Coyotes signed Taylor Pyatt on Wednesday to a one-year deal. After the deal became official, I asked General Manager Don Maloney why he signed Pyatt.

“He brings some much needed size to our forward group and he is a solid compliment to our speed and skill,” Maloney said. “In addition, he has had success in Vancouver playing in front of the net on the power play, something we have been looking for.”

I then asked Maloney where he saw Pyatt fitting in on the depth chart.

“In Vancouver, Taylor played with the Sedin twins in a top-line role and he also played a fourth-line penalty killing role, so his performance in training camp will dictate where he fits with us,” Maloney said.

If ever a player could use a change of scenery, it’s Pyatt. For those of you reading this blog who don’t know, Pyatt’s fiancee Carly died tragically in an auto accident in Jamaica earlier this year just months before their wedding.

Welcome to the Coyotes, Taylor. Good luck.

I’m sure by now most of you have read all about Wednesday’s anti-climactic bankruptcy hearing. I was there and I can tell you that next Thurday’s auction promises to be quite fascinating. It also promises to spill over into next Friday and perhaps beyond.

Judge Redfield T. Baum seemed to be running out of patience with lawyers from both sides on Wednesday. At least 10 times he told an attorney “I read that (in your brief)” as one of them tried to make a point at the podium. On the other hand, Baum seemed genuinely concerned when he implored the attorneys and their staff members to take a break from the case and enjoy the holiday weekend.

Meanwhile, I didn’t see this personally, but I read that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie actually bumped into each other inside a men’s room during a break in Wednesday’s hearing. Talk about an awkward moment.

More and more Coyotes are starting to trickle into the Athletes Resource camp being staged at the Alltel Ice Den in Scottsdale.

Defenseman Zbynek Michalek is participating now. Michalek became a father for the first time a few months ago when his wife Helena gave birth to their son Andreas.

The ice is now in at Jobing.com Arena and it is a sight for sore eyes for many people working for the team.

The rookies will be the first players to skate on it beginning Sunday at 2 p.m. when their portion of training camp begins. The workout is open to the public. I hope to see you there.

Thanks for reading.
