FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Tuesday, April 13, 2010

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- The National Hockey League announced today that the Phoenix Coyotes will select 13th at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles on Friday, June 25 (round one) and Saturday, June 26 (rounds 2-7). In addition, the Coyotes also possess their own first round pick, which will be determined at the conclusion of the Stanley Cup playoffs, giving the Coyotes two first round picks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

The Coyotes originally acquired Calgary’s first round pick along with Mathew Lombardi and Brandon Prust from the Flames on Mar. 4, 2009 for Olli Jokinen and a third round draft choice in the 2009 Entry Draft. The Coyotes draft position was determined by the NHL on Tuesday after the league conducted a Draft Drawing. The Draft Drawing consisted of a weighted lottery system that determined the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

The results of the Draft Drawing, and the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2010 Entry Draft, are as follows:

1. Edmonton Oilers
2. Boston Bruins (from Toronto)
3. Florida Panthers
4. Columbus Blue Jackets
5. New York Islanders
6. Tampa Bay Lightning
7. Carolina Hurricanes
8. Atlanta Thrashers
9. Minnesota Wild
10. New York Rangers
11. Dallas Stars
12. Anaheim Ducks
13. COYOTES (from Calgary)
14. St. Louis Blues

The remaining positions are determined at the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Drawing was conducted at the NHL’s New York office and the results were televised live on the 2010 LG NHL Draft Lottery on TSN in Canada and VERSUS in the U.S. The results also were streamed live on NHL.com, available on-demand at TSN.ca and broadcast live on SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio.

Fourteen balls, numbered 1 to 14, were placed in a lottery machine. The machine expelled four balls, forming a series of numbers. The four-digit series resulting from the expulsion of the balls was matched against a probability chart that divided the possible combinations among the 14 participating clubs. The chart showed that the Oilers had been assigned the numbers (4-8-1-2) that were expelled.

The Draft Drawing is a weighted system to give the teams that finished with the fewest points during the regular season the greatest chance of having their combination selected. The Oilers finished the regular season with the fewest points in the League (62) and were assigned the greatest number of combinations, representing a 25% likelihood that their combination would emerge. Boston was assigned 18.8% of the combinations, followed by Florida (14.2%), Columbus (10.7%) and the Islanders (8.1%). The Blue Jackets and Islanders each finished the season with 79 points, but as a result of having fewer wins, the Blue Jackets were assigned 10.7% of the number combinations and the Islanders 8.1%. The remaining teams had the following chances: 6.2%, 4.7%, 3.6%, 2.7%, 2.1%, 1.5%, 1.1%, 0.8% and 0.5%.
