GLENDALE -- Coyotes captain Shane Doan skated with teammates for a short time on Thursday morning at Arena and remains listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.

"You skate so much, and then to go 4-5 days without skating … I didn't want to wait any longer," Doan said. "We'll hope for better tomorrow."

The Coyotes skated in preparation for Game 5 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night.

Doan led the team through stretches and then participated in drills before leaving the ice after about 15 minutes. After practice, Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett told reporters Doan would likely be a game-time decision on Friday.

“In the end, one of the best pain-killers to have is adrenaline," Tippett said. "When you get in the game and the adrenaline takes over you tend to forget about injuries. We’ll evaluate him tomorrow night and if we think he can help us win he’ll be in the lineup.”

Doan suffered the injury early in the second period of Sunday’s Game 3 after tripping over Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard and crashing into the end boards.

After Thursday's practice, Doan spoke publicly about his injury/status for the first time. At one point, a reporter asked Doan how tough it was to watch the Coyotes lose Game 4 on Tuesday. Doan paused briefly before answering and then said: "I waited a long time to have a chance to play in these (games) and I was thoroughly, thoroughly enjoying playing in them and loved every minute of being out on the ice and loved the hockey, so it's tough to watch."

Doan added that he doesn’t have any regrets about avoiding Howard and crashing into the boards.

“I realized he (Howard) was in kind of a vulnerable position down on his hands and knees,” Doan said. “I didn’t want to clip him in the head or anything like that and I tried to avoid him the best I can. I want to hit them all as hard as I can, I’ve wanted to all series, but I don’t want to hit anybody in a vulnerable position and he was in that situation.”

In two-plus games in this series, Doan has tallied a goal and an assist.

The series is tied two games apiece.
