GLENDALE -- In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, one play can change the complexion of a game and a prime example of that happened Friday night in Detroit's 4-1 victory over the Coyotes.

Tied 1-1 early in the third period, the Coyotes killed off a Martin Hanzal holding penalty. Moments after leaving the penalty box, Hanzal gathered the loose puck in the neutral zone, took off on a breakaway and shot the puck on goal.

Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard blocked the puck with his glove but gave up a rebound. Hanzal took another shot, but again, Howard made another big save, this time with his stick.

After that play, momentum shifted back to Detroit.

“I had a breakaway and if I would’ve scored a goal it probably would’ve been a different game,” Hanzal said.

Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock agreed.

“That was the game when you think about it, but those were some big saves, too,” Babcock said. “I thought (Ilya) Bryzgalov made some big saves, but that was one where you can go back and say that’s a turning point in the game.”

Hanzal, who logged 18:25 of ice time, took seven shots and delivered four hits on Friday night, said he and his teammates need to do everything they can to force a Game 7 at home.

“It’s going to be hard,” Hanzal said. “We’re traveling tomorrow (and) it’s going to be a long flight, but we've got to get together and put everything into that next game. It’s not going to be easy and we've got to play a hard game and try to win it.”
