THE DESERT DOG BLOG: ANSWERS TO READERS' QUESTIONS

GLENDALE -- Thanks to everyone who responded to my invitation for questions in my last blog. I received several good ones so let’s jump right in to the cyber mailbag.

Of course, many readers of this blog are wondering what’s next with regards to the team’s ownership situation. Well, the Glendale City Council will address it again at its next meeting on Tuesday night when it decides whether, and I’m quoting from the meeting’s agenda, “to grant the City Manager authority to sign the agreements and secure the financial mechanisms that are reasonably necessary to satisfy the NHL’s requirements in order for the NHL Phoenix Coyotes to remain in Glendale during the NHL 2010-11 season.”

Coyotes fans are encouraged to attend the council meeting to show their support for the team. The meeting is set to begin at 7 p.m. at 5850 West Glendale Ave. in Glendale.

In my last blog I noted that the Coyotes have eight players who are set to become unrestricted free agents on July 1, and five players who are set to become restricted free agents. A reader named Jennifer asked me to explain the difference between a restricted free agent and an unrestricted free agent:

In a nutshell…

An unrestricted free agent is a player whose contract has come to an end and who is free to sign with any team for any amount starting on July 1.

A restricted free agent is a player whose contract has come to an end but whose rights are retained by the previous team with regards to re-signing him, trading him or receiving compensation for him in the event that player signs an offer sheet with another NHL team.

I hope this helps.

A reader named Brad asked how fans could go about purchasing tickets for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft on June 25-26 in Los Angeles.

I’m told general admission tickets will be made available for purchase after June 1 at lakings.com.

I’m also told that if fans don’t want to wait that long to buy draft tickets, they can do so earlier by joining the kids club fronted by LA Kings mascot Bailey – aka Bailey’s Buddies. (Just don’t let Howler find out - Ha! Ha!)

Finally, a reader named Nate asked for an update on defenseman Kurt Sauer, who missed all but one game in 2009-10 because of a mysterious and frustrating upper-body injury.

I saw Sauer on the day the players gathered their gear and departed for the off-season and we chatted briefly.

“I feel like I’m doing better,” Sauer said. “A couple weeks ago I saw somebody who helped out and I feel like put me on the right track to get my ears to stop ringing and take away some of my headaches. That’s a big step for me because I’ve been dealing with that the whole year, and that’s not fun. So, it’s exciting to feel good once in a while.”

Sauer is hopeful he will be ready for training camp in September.

“Taking all that time off doesn’t help a guy out so I’ve got a big summer ahead of me in two ways - to get healthy and to get ready for next season,” he said. “It will be a busy summer.”

Thanks for reading.
