GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have re-signed left wing Scottie Upshall to a one-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Scottie Upshall
“We are very pleased to have re-signed Scottie,” said Maloney. “Scottie is a talented goal scorer who plays with tremendous grit and energy. He is an important player for us and led our team in goals before being injured last season. He is now healthy and we expect him to have a very successful season.”

Upshall, 26, recorded 18-14-32 and 50 penalty minutes (PIM) 49 games for the Coyotes this season before sustaining a season-ending knee injury on Jan. 28. His 18 goals led the team at the time of his injury and also represented a new career-high for goals in a single season.

In 2008-09, Upshall began the season with Philadelphia before being traded to the Coyotes on March 4, 2009 along with a 2nd round draft choice in the 2011 Entry Draft in exchange for Daniel Carcillo. In 19 games with Phoenix, Upshall registered 8-5-13 and 26 PIM to rank 3rd on the Coyotes in scoring during that span. He finished the 2008-09 season with 15-19-34 in 74 games, setting a career-high in points. The native of Fort McMurrary Alberta also earned a silver medal while representing Canada at the 2009 World Championship in Switzerland.

In 279 career NHL games with Nashville, Philadelphia and the Coyotes, Upshall has registered 64-74-138 and 273 PIM. The 6-foot, 197-pound Upshall also recorded 50-55-105 and 202 PIM in 123 career American Hockey League (AHL) games with Milwaukee and was a part of the 2004 Calder Cup Championship team. Prior to his professional career, Upshall spent three seasons with Kamloops of the Western Hockey League (WHL) where he registered 99-127-226 and 361 PIM in 172 games. In 2001, he was named the Canadian Major Junior Rookie of the Year. Upshall was originally drafted by Nashville in the first round (6th overall) of the 2002 Entry Draft.
