GLENDALE -- On Aug. 27, the Coyotes participated in the Maricopa County Education Service Agency’s celebration for their new initiative, “Reading for the Stars by Reading with the Stars.”

The program is designed to empower young students on the importance of goal-setting and achievement in reading, which will in turn open more opportunities in the future.

More than 1,000 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students piled into the Mesa Arts Center, each child bouncing with excitement. The celebration included Howler and his other mascot friends, children’s book characters, and a mischievous character, The Dream Stealing Villain. The Dream Stealing Villain, later taken down by Howler, was scared off the stage by the kids chanting “Hope, Success, Hope, Success” at the top of their lungs.

The morning was truly inspirational and, of course, would not have been a party without Howler, who made his presence known. As soon as Howler hit the stage the entire crowd erupted in cheers, howls and whistles. Howler threw out a bounty of Coyotes hats and the kids went wild.

Maggie Goble, Coyotes Charities Coordinator, spoke on behalf of the team and “Reading for the Stars” front man, Derek Morris.

“Derek is thrilled to be a part of ‘Reading for the Stars’, and he will be supporting each and every one of you throughout the year along with everyone at the Phoenix Coyotes,” she told the kids.

The students again went wild when Derek Morris’ name was read and they howled in unison as Howler skipped off stage.

The day was truly electric as the energy coming from the kids was extraordinary.

Morris will be creating several PSA’s throughout the season for all of the kids participating in “Reading for the Stars” to view. He will be sharing tips on setting goals and how to achieve those goals. Maricopa County Education Service Agency will also be visiting the Coyotes Causes Corner during a home game this season to create awareness for the organization.
