Aucoin's Blog: Thoughts After One Week of Camp

We’re a week through training camp and things are going well. As expected, Dave Tippett and his staff are running a tight ship. ‘Tip’ has everything down to a science. He definitely doesn’t get to the rink and say ‘OK, what are we going to do here today?’ Everything we do is very predetermined which makes it really easy for the players. We get out there and we get it done.

The other day someone asked me if at this point in my career training camps are too long, too short or just right? You may be surprised to read this but I prefer a little bit longer camp, but I also prefer to kind of get away because I think that’s good for team bonding. At this point guys are prepared physically and we’re all anxious to start playing league games just because you get so anxious to get back at it.

I’ve spent a lot of time this week playing with rookie Oliver Ekman-Larsson. He’s played really good. He’s just a really smart and smooth defenseman. To find a young guy with talent like that is not that easy. I also have Michael Stone in my training camp group and he’s impressed me, too. He’ll be in the NHL someday. Like Ekman-Larsson, he definitely has the tools.

We have some intense competition for jobs in this camp, especially among the forwards. I’m glad we invited Kyle Wellwood to camp. He’s an NHLer for sure. It amazes me that he hasn’t received a contract offer somewhere if not here. As a defenseman I know how hard it is to play against him. He’s so deceptive out there. He doesn’t move too quick but that’s fine because he puts it all together and makes it a real difficult job to play against him.

I have enjoyed having Ray Whitney at camp. It makes me feel a lot younger having him around so that’s nice. Seriously he’s a good guy, he’s a good player and a great guy for our locker room. He reminds me a lot of a guy like Robert Lang. He has the right attitude and kind of a calming effect around the rink. That helps guys out a lot.

Thanks for reading.
