Aucoin's Blog: Looking Back at Trip, Ahead to Home Opener

GLENDALE -- Our long trip to Prague is over and it’s good to be back in Arizona. It was a memorable trip but we were definitely disappointed in that second game vs. Boston. Even in that first game, which we won, we gave up more scoring chances than we wanted to. We take pride in being a very hard-working, defensive-minded team and to give up a lot of quality scoring chances in both games isn’t what we were out to achieve. That being said, we’re still happy with a lot of things that we did in that first game.

Prague is an amazing city. I’d been there before with the Canadian National Team but I'd forgot just how beautiful it is. I enjoyed walking the streets and seeing the history. Coming from a place like Scottsdale, where everything is relatively new, it was cool to see buildings that were built in the 14th and 15th centuries. As far as my highlight of the trip is concerned, I’d have to say playing the games vs. Boston. The first few games of the season are always tense and exciting, and these were no exception. For me, they trumped everything else about the trip.

Flying home, which took about 16 hours, was not a highlight. Time dragged. I don’t sleep on planes so I got to walk around and watch a lot of other people sleeping, which was fun. I ended up watching a lot of movies, including “Kick-Ass,” which was a weird one. I didn’t know what to expect and it was different for sure. I also watched a lot of episodes of “Deadwood.” Good stuff.

It has been challenging getting back to normal around here. It was a great trip and we all returned with fun memories, but fighting the jet lag isn’t something that our players are enjoying doing. Then again, we’re not the only team who has ever done this. It’s nothing new. Today's "off day" will help. We will survive.

Playing the Red Wings in the home opener on Saturday night will be fun for the fans and for all of our players, too. Any home opener is always huge and the fact that we’re playing the team that knocked us out of the playoffs last year adds so much more to it. Realistically, this game is like any other in that we have to worry more about what we do more than what our opponent does. We have to focus on the things we have to control. I am confident we will.
