Shane Doan
GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan became the franchise’s all-time games played leader tonight when he played in his 1,099th career NHL game versus the Tampa Bay Lightning at the St. Pete Times Forum. Doan passed former Coyotes captain Teppo Numminen for the games played lead.

The 34-year-old Doan was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets with their first selection (seventh overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. Doan currently ranks fourth among all active NHL players in most games played with one team. He trails only Nicklas Lidstrom (1,472 GP with DET), Kris Draper (1,142 GP with DET) and Martin Brodeur (1,114 GP with NJ).

Doan entered tonight's game ranked third on the Coyotes in scoring (14-27-41), penalty minutes (49) and game winning goals (4). Doan had a season-high eight game point streak (6-7-13) from Dec. 23 through Jan. 6 and was named the NHL’s Second Star of the Week for the week ending Jan.2.

“On behalf of the entire Phoenix Coyotes organization, we congratulate Shane on this impressive milestone,” said Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney. “Not many players play their entire career with one franchise so this is a great accomplishment. Shane is a great leader and teammate and we are extremely proud to have him as our captain.”

In 2007-08, he collected a career-high 78 points with a career-high 50 assists for the Coyotes. In 2008-09, he scored a career-high 31 goals. Doan has played in two NHL All-Star Games during his career (2004 & 2009) and received the 2009-10 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a contribution in his community”. He was also a finalist for the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2009-10.
