Jovanovski Skates for First Time Since Injury
GLENDALE -- Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski on Tuesday skated for the first time since being injured in a game on Feb. 17.

“It was good to put the skates back on and it was a good first day,” said Jovanovski, who joined a few teammates on the ice inside Arena during an optional morning skate. “We’ll see it progress from here.”

Jovanovski fractured multiple orbital bones after colliding – cheek to helmet – with Atlanta’s Patrice Cormier. He immediately left the game and underwent surgery the next day. He has been on the injured reserve list since.

On Tuesday, Jovanovski wore a full facial shield on his helmet. He said he definitely would wear the shield in any game(s) he plays in again this season.

Asked if he’d watched a replay of the brutal collision with Cormier, Jovanovski said he had not.

“People ask me if it’s the worst injury I’ve ever had,” Jovanovski said. “I don’t know. I think it was one of those injuries where you automatically thought of your future. It was traumatic having a funny feeling in your face. It felt like half of it’s not there. But everything turned out great and I feel good. Today was a good day.”

The Coyotes have posted a 3-4-1 record in the eight games they’ve played since Jovanovski suffered the injury. He said it has been frustrating watching his teammates push toward the playoffs from the sideline.

“This is the stretch run where the game ramps up and emotions really play in and every goal is huge,” Jovanovski said. “It’s tough to be away and watch, but there’s not much I can do other than sit back and heal, and try to get ready for whenever I get back.”

The team originally said Jovanovski would miss four-to-six weeks because of the injury. On Tuesday, Jovanovski said that timetable had not changed. is the official Web site of the Arizona Coyotes.
