Doan Defends Hit on Franzen

GLENDALE – Shane Doan knows what kind of damage the boards at Joe Louis Arena can inflict – he took a shot to his right shoulder from them that ended his season when the Coyotes and Red Wings tangled in last year’s playoffs.

But while he wasn’t happy to see the resulting carnage to Johan Franzen’s face when it took the brunt of a meeting with the same boards early in Game 2, he said Franzen’s claim that Doan hit him from behind was a case of selective memory.

Franzen told reporters that the hit was illegal and should have, at the least, been a penalty. "I don't know why he was still in the game," he said. "He shouldn't be in the game. The (defenseman) hit me with the stick and then (Doan) hit me on my numbers.

“One cut was from the D's stick and one cut was from the boards. (Doan) hit me from behind, and they missed it somehow. He (the official) could have picked charging, boarding, whatever, pretty much."

Both Detroit Head Coach Mike Babcock and Phoenix Head Coach Dave Tippett disagreed, saying that Franzen “toe-picked” and put himself in a bad position for the meeting with the boards that resulted in 23 stitches to his face. Franzen was the only Red Wing who didn’t practice Sunday but is expect to play when the series resumes with Game 3 at Jobing.com Arena on Monday night.
Doan went a step further, saying Franzen knew he was coming and tried to deliver a blow of his own before losing balance.

“He tried to hit me as much as I tried to hit him,” Doan said. “He tried turning his body up to me. I didn’t actually hit him that hard; it was just a matter that he went in awkwardly. I know he was looking at me and I think he was trying to bump and turn and take the puck back up the wall.”
