GLENDALE, ARIZONA ---
The National Hockey League announced today that Phoenix Coyotes Captain Shane Doan has been named as one of three finalists for the 2010-11 Mark Messier Leadership Award presented by Bridgestone, an award which recognizes an individual as a superior leader in hockey and as a contributing member of society. It honors an individual who leads by positive example through on-ice performance, motivation of team members and a dedication to community activities and charitable causes. Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins and Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings were also named as finalists for the award. Doan was also nominated for the award last season.

“It’s an honor to be nominated for the Mark Messier Leadership Award,” said Doan. “Anytime you are mentioned along with Mark Messier, it’s an incredible honor. I would like to congratulate Zdeno and Nicklas on being nominated for this special award. They are both great leaders.”

Mark Messier, a six-time Stanley Cup champion and 16-time NHL All-Star in his 25 NHL seasons who is widely viewed as one of the greatest sports leaders of all time, solicits suggestions from club and League personnel and NHL fans through NHL.com in compiling a list of potential candidates. However, the selection of the three finalists and the ultimate winner is Messier’s alone.

Messier said he was impressed with Doan's leadership, especially "if you look at the situation the last two years in Phoenix and the team made the playoffs both times."

The winner will be announced Wednesday, June 22, during the 2011 NHL Awards™ that will be broadcast live from the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Hotel Las Vegas on VERSUS in the United States and on CBC in Canada (7 p.m. ET).

Doan has served as captain of the Coyotes for the past seven seasons and has ingrained himself in the Arizona community ever since the organization moved from Winnipeg in 1996-97. He has established himself as a leader both on and off the ice and for years has been considered one of the most respected players in the game, as evidenced by his being selected as Team Canada’s captain at the World Championships for three straight years (2007-09).

Despite ongoing relocation rumors and ownership uncertainty, Doan kept the Coyotes focused and together this year and under his leadership, for the first time in franchise history, the team recorded its second consecutive 40 plus wins and 95 plus points season. More importantly, Doan guided the Coyotes to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second consecutive season. His commitment to his teammates, franchise and Coyotes fans was most evident when, on February 23 at Tampa Bay, Doan became the all-time franchise leader in games played when he played his 1,119th game. Doan currently ranks fourth among all active players in most games played with one team trailing only Nicklas Lidstrom (DET), Kris Draper (DET) and Martin Brodeur (NJ).

In the Arizona community, Doan has long been considered one of the most selfless professional athletes in a city that is home to four major professional sports teams. He serves as an ambassador for Coyotes Charities and works with a number of organizations including the United Blood Services, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Phoenix Rescue Mission and Flashes of Hope, and Children First Academy, a kindergarten through eighth grade school for homeless children.
