Eye on the Pirates: Miele, Oystrick Leading the Way
By Chris Roy
The Portland Pirates, the Coyotes’ affiliate in the American Hockey League, have posted a 6-7-0-1 record after 14 games.

With their 4-2 victory over the Adirondack Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers) on Tuesday night, the Pirates improved to 4-3-0 in their past seven games.

“We’re just learning how to win,” Head Coach Ray Edwards said. “It’s a process… We’re trying to figure it out. It’s not perfect, but that’s the process we’re doing now; managing why we have letdowns and why things happen.”

Center Andy Miele has a four-game point streak (two goals and three assists) since returning from the Coyotes on Nov. 6. Overall, Miele is leading the way with five goals and eight assists in nine games with the Pirates.

Defenseman Nathan Oystrick is fourth in scoring among AHL defensemen with 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 14 games.

This weekend, the Pirates will host the East Division leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh Penguins) on Friday and the Providence Bruins (Boston Bruins) on Saturday.

Several players have been out of the lineup recently because of injuries:

• Alexander Bolduc (upper-body injury) is expected to begin skating in the next few weeks.

Brock Trotter (upper-body injury) is expected to be out for at least a month.

• Matt Watkins (upper-body injury) has been skating with the team but is still listed week-to-week.

• The Pirates also recently lost goaltender Justin Pogge to a lower-body injury. As a result, they recalled Marc Cheverie from the Coyotes’ ECHL affiliate - the Gwinnett Gladiators. Cheverie, acquired in a preseason trade with the Florida Panthers, began the season with the Pirates before being assigned the Gladiators where he posted a 2-1-2 record with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.
