The Desert Dog Blog: Maloney Says Turris Makes Coyotes Better Team

GLENDALE – The Coyotes and center Kyle Turris reunited on Tuesday, about one-fourth of the way through the 2011-12 season.

“We’re thrilled to have him,” General Manager Don Maloney told phoenixcoyotes.com after re-signing Turris to a multi-year contract. “He’s a good, young player and he makes us better. We’re glad to get this behind us and move forward.”

Maloney said the contract is contingent upon Turris passing a physical on Wednesday. Should that happen, Turris will report to the team’s top affiliate in Portland, Maine, - most likely on Sunday - to practice and start getting in game shape.

“How long it takes him to get up and running, we'll see,” Maloney said. “We’ll take our time with him… We’re hoping he can pick up where he left off at the end of last year. Against Detroit, even though that series was a disaster, he was one of our best players. I think he’s on the verge of breaking through.”

Turris will address the media for the first time at Jobing.com Arena at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, an hour before the Coyotes host the Anaheim Ducks in the first of three home games in four nights.

The Coyotes selected Turris with the third overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. In 131 games, he has notched 19 goals and 27 assists.

• In other news, center Daymond Langkow is expected to rejoin the team this week after taking a leave of absence because of a death in his family. Maloney said Langkow is not expected to play again until Friday at the earliest.
