GLENDALE – The Glendale City Council on Friday afternoon voted, 4-2, to approve a 20-year arena lease management deal with potential Coyotes owner Greg Jamison as he and his group of investors attempt to purchase the team from the National Hockey League.

The vote capped a lengthy special city council meeting at the Glendale City Court that was attended by Jamison, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly.

Jamison and Bettman both addressed the council before the vote, as did many citizens who voiced their opinions to the council.

"We believe that this team - the Coyotes - can be here with this deal in place and with new ownership," Bettman told the council. "(it) should be here. We've never wanted to leave Glendale... We believe it's in the best interest of the League to try and keep the franchise where it is."

The NHL bought the Coyotes out of bankruptcy in 2009 and has been trying to find a buyer that would keep the team in Glendale ever since.

Jamison, who is a former CEO of the San Jose Sharks, still has to be formally approved for ownership by the NHL's Board of Governors and league executives. Bettman told council members the Board of Governors expects to approve Jamison as owner in about three weeks.

"There's still a lot to be done," Jamison told the council before the vote. "...We've got to get the rest of the deal together, but I think from our perspective the future looks bright and we are excited."
