Coyotes Select Samuelsson in First Round of 2012 NHL Draft

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- The Phoenix Coyotes selected right wing Henrik Samuelsson from Edmonton of the Western Hockey League in the first round (27th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA on Friday night.

The 6-foot-2, 211 pound Samuelsson registered 7-16-23 and 48 penalty minutes (PIM) in 28 games with Edmonton (WHL) this season. He also skated in 16 games with Modo Jr. (SWE) recording 4-5-9, while also collecting two assists in 15 games with Modo (SWE).

The Scottsdale, Ariz. native recorded 4-10-14 in 17 postseason games, leading the Oil Kings to the WHL championship. Samuelsson was also named a tournament all-star at the 2012 Memorial Cup, after leading the Oil Kings in scoring (2-3-5). He also totaled 10 points for Team USA at the 2011 U 17 World Hockey Challenge. Samuelsson was invited to USA Hockey's National Junior Evaluation Camp, which will take place from Aug. 4-11 in Lake Placid, N.Y.

His father, Ulf, a former Associate Coach with the Coyotes was drafted 67th overall in the 1982 Entry Draft by the Hartford Whalers. He went on to play 1,080 NHL games for five teams (Hartford, Pittsburgh, N.Y. Rangers, Detroit and Philadelphia) and scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for Pittsburgh in 1991. His brother, Philip, was drafted 61st overall in 2009 by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
